Opt-Out

plista is one of the leading content and advertising platforms for online and mobile formats. The special feature is that you as a user, through your reading and surfing behavior, have an influence on which ads and recommendations you receive. Here you can learn how it works and how you can deactivate this feature.

Have you ever felt glad to see the right advertising at the right time? plista would like to offer you this “exactly what I was looking for” effect. Based on your individual surfing behavior plista provides you with personalized recommendations for editorial content and relevant ads on the websites of our partner network (so-called data-driven advertising).

In short, data-driven advertising is digital advertising that is based on the analysis of the usage behavior of visitors of websites and mobile apps and is delivered according to their derived interests. To make this possible, plista processes information about the usage behaviour of visitors on all websites and mobile apps of the plista partner network (i.e. on which plista products are used).

In browser environments, plista installs cookies in the browser of each visitor the first time they visit a website of the plista partner network. In these cookies plista then stores information about the visitor´s website views and clicks on article recommendations and ads within the plista partner network and analyzes it to deliver relevant article recommendations and advertisements to that visitor. Please find an overview of the plista cookies used on websites of the plista partner network, their functionality and retention period here: https://www.plista.com/privacy-policy/.

In mobile app environments, plista stores information on the visitor´s usage behavior in combination with the advertising ID (e.g. IDFA or Google Advertising IDs) that has been transmitted to us by the relevant app provider.

On all websites and mobile applications of the plista partner network, plista processes information about the usage behavior of visitors (so-called usage data). The usage data collected by plista includes in particular information about the devices used as well as information about website visits and clicks by visitors. In order to distinguish between different visitors, the usage data is combined with the cookie ID or advertising ID.

If a visitor calls a website or mobile application that uses plista products, plista can process information about the visitor´s browser choice (e.g. Firefox or Internet Explorer), operating system (e.g. macOS or Windows) and Internet provider, and whether the visitor reacts to an ad. If the visitor uses a mobile device, plista can also process information about the device type, model, design, operating system as well as information about used applications.

The usage data processed by plista never contain names, postal addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and similar data of the visitors, nor are they linked to any such information. This means that it is impossible for plista to identify natural persons.

For fraud detection purposes as well as to display country- or region-specific advertising (geotargeting) we can process visitor IP addresses. In such instances, the IP addresses are only stored in cases of suspicious activity such as traffic generated by botnets or solely in a truncated or hash format, which does not allow a visitor’s complete IP address to be identified.

In browser environments, personal data of visitors are stored exclusively decentral in the cookies in the visitors´ browsers. These cookies have a retention period of between 3 days and 12 months (with the exception of the opt-out cookie) from the last contact of the visitor with a website of the plista partner network and, subsequently, are automatically deleted together with the data stored in them. Even during the lifetime of the cookie, data is regularly overwritten with more recent information.

Personal data from mobile apps of visitors from the EU and the European Economic Area are stored on our servers hosted in the EU and deleted or anonymized at the latest one week after their collection, whereby the storage period is usually only a few minutes.

We only pass on usage data (particularly the cookie ID we have assigned by us or the respective advertising ID) to select third parties and service providers, in order to display special types of advertising (such as programmatic and retargeting campaigns). We have entered into privacy and data protection agreements with each of these third parties and service providers, to ensure a level of data protection that is similar to that of plista itself.

In certain cases plista may be obliged by law to pass on user data to third parties, e.g. in case of suspicion of a criminal offence or abuse of plista’s website. plista is then obliged to pass on data to the law enforcement authorities.

No problem. You decide whether plista should take your preferences and interests into account in order to enable a more pleasant use of the Internet tailored to your needs.

If you no longer wish to benefit from data-driven advertising, simply use the opt-out button further down on this page. When you click on the “opt-out” button, an opt-out cookie is set in your browser and all other cookies used for plista’s data-driven advertising are deleted. As long as the opt-out cookie is set, plista will not install new cookies used for data-driven advertising in your browser nor collect or evaluate further usage data from you.

Alternatively, you can use the preference management system of http://www.youronlinechoices.com and deactivate data-driven advertising from numerous providers (including plista).

Users of mobile applications can deactivate “ad tracking” in their device’s data protection settings.

Please note:

  • If you use several devices or browsers, you must opt-out on each one separately.

  • In order for plista to recognize you as a user who has decided to opt-out, you must allow cookies to be set in your browser. If you have not explicitly deactivated this, it is usually already the case.

  • If you delete all the cookies in your browser, you also remove the opt-out cookie. You will then have to repeat the opt-out process.

  • Opting out does not prevent advertisements altogether, but only the delivery of data-driven ads from plista. Content recommendations and ads will therefore still be displayed. Only the targeting, i.e. the matching of recommendations and ads to your personal interests will be omitted.

To provide transparency and consumer-friendliness, the European online advertising industry has developed a series of self-regulatory guidelines to which plista has voluntarily submitted. You can find more information on these principles here: https://edaa.eu/what-we-do/european-principles/

Furthermore, plista participates in the Transparency & Consent Framework of the IAB Europe and is registered there as a “global vendor”. You can find more information on the framework here: https://iabeurope.eu/transparency-consent-framework/.
